From Announcement to Withdrawal: Key TVK Government Decisions Changed Since May 2026
Since taking office in May 2026, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government led by Chief Minister Vijay has announced several new projects and administrative decisions in Tamil Nadu.
Within its first few months, however, some decisions were withdrawn, cancelled or reconsidered following public protests, political opposition and concerns raised by affected communities.
From the proposed ₹1,200-crore new Secretariat complex to the Melma SIPCOT land acquisition, here are some of the major decisions where the government subsequently changed or reconsidered its initial position.
₹1,200-crore New Secretariat – Pattinapakkam location reconsidered
On September 3, Chief Minister Vijay announced plans to construct a new integrated Legislative Assembly and Secretariat complex in Chennai.
The project was estimated to cost around ₹1,200 crore, with a proposed built-up area of nearly 20 lakh square feet.
Around 25.55 acres at Foreshore Estate in Pattinapakkam was subsequently considered for the project.
The proposed location, however, faced opposition from fishing communities and political parties.
Fisherfolk raised concerns over possible impacts on their livelihoods, access to the sea, traffic and the character of the coastal neighbourhood.
Following the opposition, reports emerged that the government was considering alternative locations.
Importantly, the new Secretariat project itself has not officially been cancelled. The government has said that feasibility will be examined through a Detailed Project Report before a final decision is taken.
Current status: The Secretariat project remains under consideration, while the proposed Pattinapakkam location is being reconsidered.
Melma SIPCOT – Land acquisition notification withdrawn
Another significant development occurred at Melma near Cheyyar in Tiruvannamalai district.
On September 1, the government issued a notification relating to the acquisition of approximately 22.16 hectares of land for expansion of the SIPCOT industrial park.
Farmers in the region had already been protesting against land acquisition for the industrial expansion.
Following continued opposition from farmers, the government withdrew the September 1 land-acquisition notification.
Current status: The particular land-acquisition notification has been withdrawn.
Waste-management privatisation study – Tenders withdrawn
The government also initiated a move to examine the feasibility of outsourcing solid-waste collection and transportation in 12 municipal corporations, including Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Tambaram and Avadi.
Tenders were floated to prepare a Detailed Feasibility Report for the proposal.
The move faced political opposition and concerns that municipal sanitation operations could be further privatised.
Following the criticism, the government withdrew the tenders for the feasibility study.
This case is significant because the tenders were floated after the TVK government assumed office.
Current status: The feasibility-study tenders were withdrawn.
Order concerning students joining protests withdrawn
On August 14, directions were issued concerning the participation of school and college students in protests organised by certain political organisations.
The move triggered criticism and a wider debate over students' democratic rights and participation in political protests.
Following the controversy, the government withdrew the order on August 19.
Current status: The order was withdrawn.
Astrologer's appointment as Chief Minister's OSD revoked
One of the earliest reversals came shortly after the new government assumed office.
Astrologer Rickey Radhan Pandit Vettrivel was appointed as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to Chief Minister Vijay.
The appointment attracted criticism from opposition parties as well as some parties supporting the government, with questions raised over rationalism, scientific temper and the role of such an appointment in government administration.
Within roughly 24 hours, the appointment was revoked.
Current status: The OSD appointment was cancelled.
Not all of these decisions have the same status
It is important to distinguish between a project being cancelled, an order being withdrawn, and a proposal being reconsidered.
The student-related order and the OSD appointment were withdrawn or cancelled.
The Melma land-acquisition notification was withdrawn.
The waste-management feasibility-study tenders were withdrawn.
In the Secretariat case, however, the project itself has not been officially cancelled. The controversy primarily concerns the proposed Pattinapakkam location, which is being reconsidered.
Four months of announcements, opposition and changes
These developments occurred during the first few months of the TVK government's tenure, between May and September 2026.
Opposition parties have argued that some of the reversals indicate that decisions were taken without sufficient consultation or examination.
The government and its supporters have presented changes made after objections as evidence that the administration is willing to listen to affected communities and reconsider decisions where necessary.
The circumstances are different in each case.
What can be established is that several decisions announced or initiated after the new government took office were subsequently withdrawn, cancelled or reconsidered following opposition, protests or implementation concerns.
Understanding the distinction between those outcomes is important when assessing the government's record during its first months in office.
