Surface-to-air missile systems have been installed at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida and near the Trump International Airport in West Palm Beach. The deployment of the Avenger Air Defence Systems, which are short-range units mounted on Humvee vehicles, has prompted speculation regarding potential military escalation in the Middle East.
Two Avenger systems were observed on a floating barge in the Lake Worth Lagoon, adjacent to the 17-acre Mar-a-Lago property. A separate battery has been positioned on the southern perimeter of the Donald J. Trump International Airport, near the designated parking area for Air Force One. While the US Secret Service characterized the move as an additional security layer, the timing has drawn attention due to ongoing geopolitical tensions.
According to aviation analyst Dewitt Ingram, these systems serve as a final line of defense against low-altitude aerial threats, such as drones or aircraft, rather than long-range ballistic missiles. The North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) and US Northern Command confirmed the deployment in a joint statement, noting that the assets were placed at the request of the Secret Service. NORAD declined to provide specific operational details, citing security considerations.
The installation coincides with efforts to permanently restrict airspace surrounding the Florida estate. NORAD reports that it has intercepted more than 60 aircraft near the property since the President returned to the White House last year, including an incident on October 24 involving an F-16 fighter jet.
These security measures occur amid reports of potential military planning involving Iran. US Senator Chris Murphy recently criticized a proposed war plan he had been briefed on, stating, "Some of us have been briefed on the war plan. And while I cannot disclose any details, I can say this: the plan is insane. It will not achieve objectives and will set off a new cycle of escalation."
Reports indicate that the administration has engaged Gulf nations regarding a possible military campaign following the upcoming midterm elections. Additionally, the US military has launched an initiative known as FORTRESS, designed to ensure military bases can maintain operations for 90 days independently in the event of supply chain or power grid disruptions.
