Ethanol Blending: Will Car Mileage Decrease? – A Brief Story In India, ethanol blending in petrol is currently increasing. Ethanol is a type of alcohol fuel produced from sugarcane, maize, and similar sources. The government's objective is to reduce crude oil imports, save dollar expenditure, provide additional income to farmers, and reduce air pollution. Currently, E20 (20% ethanol + 80% petrol) fuel is used in India. The government states that vehicle mileage will decrease by only 2% to 6% due to this. However, some users complain of a significant reduction in mileage. Recently, E85 (85% ethanol) and in the future E100 (100% ethanol) fuels have been introduced. However, special Flex-Fuel vehicles will be required to use these. If E85 is used in a normal car or bike, it may cause damage to the engine and fuel system. The government has also refuted rumors circulating regarding insurance. It has been clarified that the information stating insurance becomes invalid due to E20 use is false. However, the high amount of water required for ethanol production remains a major challenge. Approximately 3,000 liters of water may be needed to produce one liter of ethanol. Overall, ethanol is seen as an alternative fuel that can help reduce India's dependence on fuel imports. But questions such as mileage, vehicle compatibility, and water usage are still under discussion.
