In recent years, various natural changes have occurred due to climate change. The unpredictable changes in nature caused by this have raised various concerns. In this regard, researchers have warned that the impact of climate change in the Himalayas will directly affect crores of people in India.
The Gangetic plains and the Indus plains are among the most densely populated regions in the world. This region, through which the Indus, Ganges, Brahmaputra, and their tributaries originating in the Himalayas flow, is considered one of the most fertile regions in the world. It is estimated that about 100 crore people live only in the areas where these rivers flow in India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh.
The lives of the people in these regions, which are among the most densely populated in the world, depend on these rivers. In this context, a study published by professors from the Centre for Oceans, Rivers, Atmosphere and Land Sciences (CORAL) at IIT Kharagpur has stated that high-altitude mountainous regions in the Himalayas, such as Gulmarg and Pahalgam, are warming up very rapidly.
Furthermore, the study confirmed that these regions have warmed by approximately 1 degree Celsius in the last 20 years alone. As a result, snow in the Himalayan region is melting rapidly, and this continuous snowmelt event, scientists warn, will affect the water flow of major Asian rivers in the future, posing a major threat to the drinking water and livelihood security of crores of people who depend on them.
