Weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu secured India's first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow . Competing in the women's 48kg category, the 31-year-old achieved a total lift of 190kg to claim the top spot on the podium.
Chanu set new Commonwealth Games records with an 85kg snatch and a 105kg clean and jerk. She finished 22kg ahead of silver medalist Ruth Asuquo Nyong of Nigeria, marking her third consecutive gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
Despite an initial failed snatch attempt, Chanu dominated the competition throughout the event. She opted to skip her final clean and jerk attempt to preserve her fitness for the upcoming Asian Games.
