Higher Education Minister P. Viswanathan and local MLAs boycotted the 33rd convocation of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University today. The boycott was sparked by a protocol controversy where the state song, Tamil Thai Vazhthu, was scheduled to be played third, after Vande Mataram and the National Anthem. Critics called this a major insult, especially since the university is named after the author of the state song. Meanwhile, students staged intense protests after being told only gold medallists would get degrees on stage. The university later agreed to let the Governor distribute degrees to all scheduled students, ending the strike.
