Banks have collected more than ₹26,170 crore in penalties from customers over the past four years for failing to maintain minimum average balances in their accounts. This data was officially disclosed recently.
In the 2024-2025 financial year alone, banks collected ₹6,974.79 crore in such charges. Furthermore, for the 2025-2026 financial year, penalties amounting to ₹7,086.63 crore were imposed on customers for failing to meet minimum balance requirements.
