The death toll from the ongoing floods in Assam has risen to 75 following seven additional fatalities in Sivasagar district. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, 3.32 lakh people across seven districts and 622 villages remain affected. The state is currently operating 81 relief camps to house displaced residents.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the government has relaxed ex gratia norms, removing the requirement for post-mortem reports to claim compensation. Families of the deceased will now receive an additional Rs 5 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, supplementing the existing Rs 4 lakh payment. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reviewed the situation and pledged full central support.
To assist in recovery, Air India Express has waived cargo charges for transporting relief materials to Guwahati from Delhi, Bengaluru, and Kolkata. Additionally, the state government and various NGOs are prioritizing livestock protection by providing fodder and veterinary care in the most severely affected areas.
