The Tamil Nadu government has announced plans to introduce a new 'environmental and social welfare tax' on liquor sales to address the environmental impact and social issues associated with alcohol consumption. To implement this, the state will amend the Tamil Nadu Value Added Tax Act, 2006.
Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration P. Moorthy stated that the revenue generated from this levy will be dedicated to the proper recycling of liquor bottles, rehabilitation programs for those struggling with addiction, and support for affected families. Additionally, the funds will be utilized for environmental protection initiatives and public awareness campaigns.
