Nearly 4,000 MW of solar energy projects in Tamil Nadu have been impacted by allegations of corruption during the previous DMK government, according to Indian Solar Association president C. Narasimhan.
In Virudhunagar alone, a sub-station project for 1,750 MW was reportedly sold by DMK ministers, with similar complaints emerging from other parts of the state. The current government has since suspended these projects and initiated action against the officials involved.
Investors affected by these suspensions are now advised to apply online to secure government approvals. Meanwhile, the state government has announced an additional subsidy of ₹22,000 for one lakh connections under the PM Rooftop Solar Scheme. While 60 lakh households have benefited from the central scheme nationwide, the number of beneficiaries in Tamil Nadu remains below 50,000.
Regarding solar panel production, Narasimhan noted that India possesses an indigenous capacity to produce 65 GW of solar cells and 161 GW of solar modules. Industry stakeholders had previously sought permission to import cells to meet demand, leading to legal action and a subsequent stay, which has now allowed for the resumption of cell imports.
