Natarajan Chandrasekaran has announced he will step down as chairman of Tata Sons and will not seek reappointment when his current term concludes in February 2027. He has requested that the board initiate the succession process immediately to ensure a smooth leadership transition. This decision follows a lack of unanimous support from the board regarding his term extension.
Chandrasekaran, who joined the Tata Group in 1987 and became chairman in 2017, cited a lack of consensus among board members as the primary reason for his departure. Reports indicate internal tensions regarding group strategy and board representation, specifically involving Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata, who reportedly opposed the reappointment.
Following the announcement, shares of major Tata Group companies experienced a decline. Tata Consultancy Services fell 3.9 percent, Tata Steel dropped 1.83 percent, and Tata Power Company declined 1.26 percent during morning trading. The company's annual general meeting is scheduled for August 18.
