The Indian government has introduced new restrictions on sugar stocks to control rising prices across the country. The move follows a significant price increase, with the retail cost of sugar climbing from Rs 48.18 per kilogram on July 20 to Rs 55.70 by August 20.
Under the new regulations, sugar traders are restricted to holding a maximum stock of 400 tonnes between August 1 and November 30. Additionally, effective September 1, bulk consumers are prohibited from storing more than 15 days' worth of their required sugar supply. The government has also directed sugar mills to commence sugarcane crushing operations by October 15.
