A Niti Aayog report reveals that approximately 8.7 crore Indians aged 15 to 29 are currently not in education, employment, or training. Based on 2021 National Sample Survey data, the findings highlight that these individuals face significant financial hurdles, as they lack income while having already invested in their prior education.
The report identifies cost as a major barrier, noting that students from low-income households struggle to afford additional skilling courses alongside conventional degrees. Consequently, many graduates accept low-paying formal jobs to support their families, while others fail to transition into the workforce entirely.
To address these challenges, the Aayog recommends subsidised training programmes and financial support tailored to local demand and emerging sectors. The report emphasises that aligning education with industry needs is essential for India's development, noting that only 8.25 per cent of graduates currently hold roles matching their qualifications.
