Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling for an immediate overhaul of the current caste census data collection process. The leaders emphasized that accurate data is essential for the effective implementation of social justice policies.
The pair argued that the existing "open-ended" questionnaire is misleading, as it allows for the same caste to be recorded under various names. They warned that this method risks fragmenting single communities into thousands of disparate categories, leading to inaccurate data that could adversely affect marginalized and backward sections of society. Consequently, they have requested the withdrawal of the current questionnaire in favor of a more precise and comprehensive methodology.
