Launched by the National Payments Corporation of India on August 25, 2016, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has become the backbone of India's digital economy. Transaction volumes surged from 1.78 crore in the 2016-17 fiscal year to 24,162 crore by July 31, 2026. During the same period, the total value of transactions climbed from ₹0.07 lakh crore to ₹314 lakh crore, with daily transactions now averaging 66 crore.
The number of participating banks has expanded from 44 to 703, driven by increased smartphone penetration, affordable internet access, and the widespread adoption of QR codes. By reaching small merchants and rural areas, UPI has significantly bolstered financial inclusion. Recognized by the International Monetary Fund as the world's largest real-time payment system, UPI is now operational in 11 countries, including the UAE, France, and Singapore, serving as a vital pillar of India's digital public infrastructure.
