A catastrophic flood in Nepal, which has claimed at least 157 lives and left hundreds missing, was triggered by a massive landslide in the Himalayas. Geophysicist Göran Ekström of Columbia University described the event as a significant geophysical occurrence that registered a 5.2 magnitude earthquake on global seismographs. The landslide dislodged a large glacier, releasing a torrent of ice, debris, and water into the valley below.
Experts estimate the floodwaters reached heights of up to 160 feet and traveled at speeds of approximately 44 miles per hour. The intense energy generated by the falling rocks likely melted the glacier, contributing to the extreme volume of water. While such events occur naturally, researchers note that climate change is accelerating glacial melting and increasing the frequency of these dangerous landslides.
As of Wednesday evening, local authorities reported 75 injuries, while the Nepal Tourism Board confirmed 384 people remain missing. The missing individuals include 93 Nepalis and 291 foreigners, among whom are at least 47 American tourists. Search and rescue efforts continue in the affected regions following the disaster.
