Catastrophic flash floods triggered by a glacial collapse in Nepal and Tibet have claimed at least 270 lives, with hundreds more reported missing. The US Geological Survey confirmed that the collapse caused significant seismic activity and debris flows along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers. Currently, 826 people are missing in Nepal and 558 in Tibet, as rescue teams continue to search through mud and debris for survivors.
The missing include foreign nationals from India, Australia, the United States, and Britain. While approximately 100 Indian citizens have been located, the Ministry of External Affairs stated that more than 280 others remain uncontactable. In response, India has dispatched military aircraft carrying 47 tonnes of humanitarian aid, including food and medicine, while the United States has pledged $500,000 in emergency assistance.
Authorities in the Indian states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are on high alert for potential flooding in the Gandak river basin as the situation remains critical.
