Surgeons at University College London Hospital have successfully performed the world's first brain surgery using real-time artificial intelligence assistance. The patient, 48-year-old Rhys Hibbert, underwent the procedure to remove an 11mm non-cancerous tumour from his pituitary gland, which had been threatening his vision. The AI tool analysed live video feeds during the operation to help surgeons navigate around critical blood vessels and nerves.
The technology functions similarly to facial recognition, identifying hidden anatomical structures to guide surgical instruments safely. Developed by researchers at UCL and funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research and Google, the system was trained on hundreds of previous surgical videos. Professor Hani Marcus, who participated in the procedure, described the AI as an expert second pair of eyes that provides real-time guidance while surgeons retain full control.
Following the successful operation, Mr. Hibbert reported significant improvements in his vision and energy levels. The surgical team is now planning a larger trial for the technology, with the long-term goal of creating an AI-based advisory tool for surgeons. Health Innovation Minister James Frith noted that the government remains committed to balancing AI safety safeguards with the potential benefits of such medical innovations.
