The Mettur Dam is set to be opened today, providing irrigation for 1.6 million acres of land in the Cauvery Delta region. Water release is scheduled to continue for the next 45 days. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is expected to arrive in Salem by private aircraft at 11:00 a.m. before reaching the dam site by car at noon to preside over the opening.
Security has been significantly tightened for the event, with 4,000 police personnel deployed, including 15 Superintendents of Police, 15 Additional SPs, and 35 Deputy SPs. Authorities have implemented a drone ban in the area and installed iron barricades along 15 kilometers of road at a cost of 45 million rupees to manage the proceedings.
