The Tamil Nadu registration department has initiated a tender to digitise millions of historical documents, including property records dating back to 1865 and extensive birth and death certificates. Inspector General of Registration G.K. Arun Sundar Thayalan stated that the project covers 2.23 crore documents across 581 sub-registrar offices, aiming to enhance searchability and curb fraudulent transactions.
The initiative will integrate data into the STAR 2.0 platform and include encumbrance details from 1865 to 1974. The process requires 1.2 petabytes of storage and will be managed through secure audit trails, with officials using fingerprint authentication and digital signatures to verify batches before storage at the state data centre in Perungudi.
Officials expect the entire digitisation exercise to be completed within 14 months, with the final month dedicated to verification and handover. Bids for the project are scheduled to open on September 15 and will close on September 23.
