Minister Nirmal Kumar stated in the Legislative Assembly that former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi could have prevented the cession of Katchatheevu had he chosen to intervene. Citing the precedent set by former West Bengal Chief Minister B.C. Roy, who successfully blocked the transfer of Berubari island to East Pakistan by approaching the Supreme Court, the Minister argued that similar legal action could have been taken in this instance.
Minister Kumar further alleged that the island was ceded with Karunanidhi’s consent following two private discussions. He claimed that when Indian diplomat Kewal Singh visited, he pressured the Chief Minister by citing legal cases, leading Karunanidhi to secretly agree to the transfer under duress.
