Flower prices at the Mattuthavani market in Madurai have risen sharply due to the combined demand of Vinayagar Chaturthi and an auspicious wedding day. Traders report that the cost of various flowers, particularly jasmine, has increased significantly compared to last week.
Jasmine, which sold for 400 rupees per kilogram last week, is now priced between 1,200 and 1,500 rupees. Other varieties have also seen steep hikes, with mullai flowers selling for 900 rupees, kanakambaram for 1,000 rupees, and paneer roses for 350 rupees per kilogram.
Supplies arrive at the market from Madurai and surrounding areas in the early morning hours for both wholesale and retail distribution. The sudden price surge has drawn considerable attention from the public and traders alike as festival demand continues to climb.
