The central and state governments have announced that salaries for September will be disbursed to employees and pensioners today, September 25, to avoid potential delays caused by an upcoming nationwide bank strike. Bank employees have scheduled a three-day strike starting September 28, which is expected to disrupt banking operations through the end of the month.
The Office of the Controller General of Accounts (CGA) issued a circular confirming that, in light of the anticipated disruption to banking services from September 28 to 30, central government employees and pensioners will receive their payments in advance on September 25. To mitigate the impact of the strike, the Ministry of Finance has also directed public sector banks to remain operational on Sunday, September 27. Banks are currently notifying customers that digital platforms, including mobile banking, net banking, UPI, and ATM services, will remain available for transactions during the strike period.
Following the central government's lead, the Tamil Nadu government has also issued orders to disburse salaries and pensions for state employees, teachers, and pensioners today, September 25. Typically, state government payments are processed on the final working day of the month; however, concerns regarding the strike prompted this early release.
In a communication to all department heads, Tamil Nadu Finance Secretary M.A. Siddique noted that the combination of the bank strike and subsequent holidays from October 2 to 4 would severely impact routine banking operations. Consequently, he instructed all department heads to ensure that salary bills are prepared and processed for payment by September 25. The Director of Treasuries and Accounts, D. Charusree, has further directed all treasury officers to ensure that electronic settlements for monthly salaries, daily wages, and pensions are completed today, bypassing the usual end-of-month schedule.
