Senior Counsel Raja sought the Madras High Court to transfer the case to CBI investigation
The Chennai police have constituted a four-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the case against Gem Granites chairman R Veeramani in connection with allegations of sexual offences against minor girls.
The SIT will be headed by Additional Commissioner of Police PC Thenmozhi of the Central Crime Branch in Chennai city police. The other members are Joint Commissioner of Police N Disha Mittal of the West Zone, Superintendent of Police J Mutharasi, who handles spokesperson and media relations, and Deputy Commissioner of Police Geethanjali of the Central Women and Children (CWC) unit.
The team was formed as the investigation into the case expanded following the arrest of Veeramani and his associates. Police have been examining evidence and statements collected during the investigation, including digital material linked to the case.
Veeramani was arrested along with Shanthi and Mahendra Simhan in Aug 29 in connection with the POCSO case. A former employee of Gem Granites, Ganesan, was subsequently arrested after police found a video linked to the case on his mobile phone on Sep 22. Investigators were examining how he obtained the video and why he did not report it to the police.
The SIT will coordinate the investigation and examine the evidence and statements collected so far as part of the continuing probe.
Meanwhile, Senior Counsel Raja on Friday has sought the First Bench of the Madras High Court, before the Chief Justice Dhamathigari, to transfer the case to the Crime Branch Investigation (CBI) investigation, as two senior IPS officers - Additional Director General of Police A Arun and Inspector General of Police N Kannan - have been moved to compulsory wait by the state govt on Thursday.
