Tamil Nadu has emerged as India's leading destination for foreign direct investment (FDI) equity inflows during the April–June quarter of FY2026-27, attracting nearly $5.95 billion and accounting for around 30% of the country's total equity FDI during the period.
According to data from the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), India's total FDI equity inflows stood at approximately $19.81 billion during the first quarter of FY27.
Tamil Nadu's inflows increased sharply compared with the same quarter of the previous financial year, when the State received about $2.7 billion.
Tamil Nadu Moves Ahead of Major FDI Destinations
Tamil Nadu's approximately $5.95 billion inflow placed it ahead of Maharashtra, Delhi, Karnataka and Gujarat during the quarter.
Maharashtra received around $4.22 billion, representing approximately 21% of India's equity FDI, while Delhi accounted for around 13%. Karnataka's share fell to approximately 11%, while Gujarat accounted for around 7%.
Shriram Finance Deal Plays Major Role
A significant portion of Tamil Nadu's increase was associated with the major foreign investment involving Chennai-headquartered Shriram Finance and Japan's Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG).
MUFG's investment for a 20% stake in Shriram Finance was valued at approximately $4.4 billion, making it one of the major foreign investments associated with the State during the period.
However, analysts have also pointed to Tamil Nadu's broader ability to attract investment across manufacturing and Global Capability Centres (GCCs).
Services Sector Sees Strong Growth
At the national level, FDI into the services sector—which includes financial services, banking, insurance, business services, outsourcing and research and development—rose substantially during the quarter.
Tamil Nadu has also continued to attract investments and expansion plans from multinational companies across manufacturing, technology and GCC operations.
A Strong Quarter, But an Important Distinction
Tamil Nadu's No. 1 position applies specifically to FDI equity inflows during April–June 2026 (Q1 FY27).
It should not be interpreted as Tamil Nadu becoming India's largest FDI destination historically or on a cumulative basis.
Nevertheless, receiving roughly 30% of India's equity FDI in a single quarter represents a significant increase for the State and highlights the scale of investment recorded during the opening quarter of FY2026-27.
