Agricultural lands in the Thirumarugal region of Nagapattinam district are facing severe drought conditions as water releases from the Cauvery River remain suspended. The lack of irrigation has left fields parched, with cultivation plummeting from one lakh acres last year to less than 5,000 acres this season.
Farmers in the area are now facing significant losses as the limited crops already planted are at risk of withering due to the acute water shortage.
