Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced her intention to return to Bangladesh this December, stating she is prepared to face arrest or imprisonment. Speaking virtually at a press conference in New Delhi, she emphasized that her return is aimed at restoring democratic institutions and addressing the suffering of the Bangladeshi people rather than seeking power. She also characterized the 2024 'July Uprising' that led to her ouster as a orchestrated regime change operation.
The Bangladesh government expressed outrage over the event, labeling Hasina an "absconding convicted genocider" and criticizing the Indian government for allowing the interaction to take place. The foreign ministry stated that the event could negatively impact bilateral relations, noting that concerns had been raised with New Delhi prior to the conference.
Amid the ongoing tensions, the Awami League reported that the home of cricketer Shakib Al Hasan, who participated in the event, was attacked in Bangladesh. During her address, Hasina called for the lifting of the ban on her party, the release of political prisoners, and the restoration of judicial and media independence.
