The Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department has announced a complete ban on mobile phone usage within major temples under its jurisdiction, effective September 1. This directive aims to curb the recording of videos and the creation of social media reels inside temple premises. Authorities have been instructed to implement the necessary security arrangements to enforce this policy within the next 20 days.
The decision aligns with existing court orders prohibiting photography and videography of sanctum sanctorums and temple deities. Minister P.K. Sekar Babu stated that the measure is intended to preserve the sanctity of these religious sites. Additionally, temple administrations must now notify the commissioner at least one day in advance regarding visits by actors, political leaders, and other prominent figures. During such visits, photography and videography remain strictly prohibited within the temple complex.
