India Faces Rapid Aging Before Economic Maturity

A new study by Transform Rural India warns that the nation is transitioning into an aging society before achieving full economic development. Projections indicate that by 2050, the number of citizens aged 60 and older will reach approximately 347 million, accounting for one-fifth of the total population.

The report highlights that 70 percent of this elderly population will reside in rural areas. Unlike developed nations, which experienced population aging only after reaching high levels of economic prosperity, India faces this demographic shift while still classified as a low-income economy, presenting a significant structural challenge.
