The ₹621-crore Teynampet-Saidapet flyover project on Anna Salai has been delayed after officials identified a design flaw regarding the alignment of existing Metro rail foundations. The project, which was originally scheduled for completion in September 2026, now faces a revised deadline of February 2027 due to the need for a scope change.
Engineers discovered that the original plan for central pillars was incompatible with the narrow stretch between Nandanam and Teynampet, where Metro foundations are not aligned in a straight line. To address this, the highways department has shifted to a portal pillar design, which will be installed on both sides of the road rather than the median.
While 88 of the planned 131 pillars have been erected, construction on the affected stretch remains stalled. Officials stated that the revised design, approved last month, will not increase the total project cost. Traffic diversions remain in place along Theagaraya Road, Cenotaph Road, and Muthuramalinga Thevar Road to manage congestion during the construction period.
