The Maharashtra government will cover all maintenance costs, including food and medical expenses, for police dogs upon their retirement. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced the policy, emphasizing that dogs should not be abandoned after completing 10 years of service.
Under the new directive, the retired animals will not be given up for adoption to third parties. Instead, they will remain under the care of the same handlers who managed them during their active service with the police force.
