The Tamil Nadu government has awarded a contract to Kerala-based firms Joyalukkas and Kalyan Jewellers to supply 441,667 gold rings for the "Thaimaman Thanga Mothiram" scheme. The companies secured the deal by bidding a making charge of one paisa per gram, with the work order divided in a 70:30 ratio. The initiative provides gold rings to infants born in government hospitals.
Opposition parties, including the AIADMK and BJP, have criticized the procurement, citing concerns over the exclusion of local firms, the financial viability of the low bid, and the potential impact on local artisans. Some observers suggest the jewellers may be using the project as a marketing strategy, potentially funding costs through corporate social responsibility initiatives.
Health Minister KG Arunraj defended the tender, asserting that the process adhered to all legal requirements and aims to encourage deliveries in government hospitals. Despite the government's stance that the project will bolster public trust in health services, the one-paisa bid has triggered significant political debate. The scheme is scheduled to launch on September 15.
