A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck Tibet on Thursday, according to India's National Center for Seismology. The tremor occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres, approximately 128 kilometres north-east of Joshimath in Uttarakhand. Authorities have not yet reported any casualties or property damage resulting from the event.
This seismic activity follows a recent Himalayan glacier disaster that caused severe flooding across Tibet and Nepal. Current reports indicate the death toll from the flooding has reached 1,252, with at least 4,216 individuals still missing.
The Himalayan region remains highly seismically active due to the ongoing collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. While the recent glacier collapse was initially linked to seismic activity, investigations confirmed the disaster was triggered by a massive rock-and-ice avalanche from the Langtang Lirung mountain.
