The Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, informed the Rajya Sabha that the central government has received no request from the Tamil Nadu government to relocate the proposed greenfield airport in Parandur. The project, intended to serve as Chennai's second airport, received in-principle approval on April 7, 2025, for the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO).
According to the application submitted in September 2024, the estimated cost for the first phase of the project is approximately 10,500 crore rupees. Under the Greenfield Airport Policy of 2008, the responsibility for land acquisition, securing environmental clearances, and financial allocation rests with the state government or the airport developer. The ministry clarified that the project's timeline remains contingent upon the completion of land acquisition and the receipt of necessary regulatory approvals.
