West Bengal Police Special Task Force (STF) has arrested Arpita Sarkar in Jharkhand, following the earlier detention of suspected terrorist Hamim Mondal in Burdwan. Investigators allege that Mondal was operating under instructions from Pakistan-based handlers to purchase police uniforms and mobilize a group to incite disturbances at Delhi's Jantar Mantar. Officials are currently working to determine if Mondal successfully recruited a team for this operation.
Authorities state that Mondal was recruited approximately four to five months ago by handlers using encrypted messaging platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Session. The STF identified four specific Pakistan-linked handles, allegedly connected to the Shahzad Bhatti gang, which were used to disseminate propaganda and assign tasks. These handlers reportedly utilized SIM cards from Britain and Mexico to communicate with their operatives.
Arpita Sarkar, who was linked to Mondal through digital evidence, is also under investigation for her alleged involvement in a honey-trap network targeting influential political figures. Police believe the pair was part of an ISI-backed module tasked with gathering intelligence on VIPs and expanding a recruitment network. The investigation remains ongoing, with officials expecting further arrests as they analyze digital evidence.
