Asish Banerjee, the former deputy speaker of the West Bengal assembly and a five-time MLA from Rampurhat, was found dead this morning at a Trinamool Congress office in Birbhum district. Police confirmed his body was discovered hanging and has been sent for a postmortem examination.
A handwritten note was reportedly found near the body, in which Banerjee expressed regret over his political career and denied involvement in corruption. The letter alleged that he had no real authority within the Tarapith Rampurhat Development Authority and claimed he had been subjected to a smear campaign.
Trinamool MP Abhishek Banerjee condemned the alleged campaign against the late leader, urging reflection on the impact of public accusations. The incident follows a period of political transition in the region, during which several party members have faced corruption-related investigations.
