The US Department of Homeland Security has proposed substantial fee increases for H-1B visas and F-1 Optional Practical Training (OPT) programs. Reports indicate that proposed fees could reach $103,265 for H-1B petitions and $100,000 for OPT applications, with the measures currently under review by the White House Office of Management and Budget.
These potential changes are expected to significantly impact Indian nationals, who account for 71 percent of the 399,402 H-1B petitions approved in 2024. Immigration services firm Fragomen warned that the regulations would increase costs for foreign workers, students transitioning to the workforce, and sponsoring employers.
Additionally, the Department of Homeland Security has proposed eliminating the 60-day grace period for unemployed H-1B workers. If finalized, this rule would require affected individuals and their dependents to leave the United States immediately upon the termination of their employment.
