The Delhi High Court has ordered the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to conduct a high-level inquiry into the collapse of a five-storey building in Satya Niketan that killed seven people. The court directed the civic body to determine if the structure had valid permissions and to hold officials accountable for any lapses. Following the incident, the MCD has suspended its South Zone Deputy Commissioner and four engineers pending disciplinary action, while three individuals associated with the property have been arrested.
Emphasizing that authorities cannot shirk their responsibility, the court demanded an urgent audit of all paying guest accommodations across the capital to ensure compliance with building bylaws and safety standards. The bench questioned why PG facilities remain unregulated compared to guesthouses and urged the government to frame strict parameters regarding size, electricity, and structural safety. The court also called for reports from the Centre, Delhi government, and the National Human Rights Commission to prevent future tragedies.
Highlighting the risks posed to students, the Chief Justice stressed the need for increased investment in official hostel facilities to accommodate those moving to the city for education. Rescue operations involving multiple agencies remain ongoing, and the court has requested that authorities double their efforts to save lives. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on September 26.
