Assam continues to manage the aftermath of severe flooding, which has claimed 82 lives and left approximately 1.78 lakh people affected across seven districts. Although water levels are receding in some areas, 349 villages remain impacted, with Charaideo and Sivasagar identified as the most severely hit regions. Currently, 44 relief camps are providing shelter to 15,000 displaced individuals, while the state government prepares to distribute financial assistance starting August 3.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has initiated a tour of the affected districts to oversee relief operations and coordinate a comprehensive damage assessment scheduled for August 9. The state government is also partnering with IIT-Guwahati to develop long-term strategies to combat Brahmaputra riverbank erosion. Additionally, Agriculture Minister Pijush Hazarika has launched seedling distribution programs to assist farmers in resuming cultivation.
The central government has sanctioned Rs 379.35 crore under the State Disaster Response Fund to support ongoing relief efforts. Various organizations, including the Reliance Foundation, have also contributed to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. Authorities are now prioritizing the restoration of infrastructure and the provision of essential supplies to prevent potential disease outbreaks in waterlogged areas.
