Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay convened a meeting of state MPs on Saturday to demand a permanent freeze on the number of Lok Sabha seats at 543. The meeting resolved to urge the Union government to abandon delimitation plans, which participants argued would diminish the state's political representation and influence.
The initiative faced significant opposition, with 37 of the state's 57 MPs boycotting the session, including representatives from the DMK and AIADMK. Critics, including DMK leader Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, dismissed the meeting as a political distraction from other pressing issues like the Cauvery water dispute and the Mekedatu dam project.
Despite the boycott, those in attendance maintained that the current parliamentary strength must be preserved to protect the rights of states that have successfully managed population growth. The state government is expected to introduce a formal resolution in the Assembly next week to solidify this stance against potential changes to constituency representation.
